Entertainment in Performance

The Japanese group Gamarjobat really knows how to take old ideas and make them entertaining.  These are simple gags that we’ve seen a thousand times yet I find myself smiling and laughing as I watch utilize these simple tricks in their performance.  I would say it’s a mix between the setups and misdirects, the sounds they use to imply the emotion and sell reactions, the interaction between the two, as well as knowing the simplicity of the gags themselves can be used to add humor to the show is what keeps me watching.  Simple but well executed.  Overall some fun mime work to watch!

Stan Winston School of Character Arts

Between all of the online schools, professional and student blogs, and various websites there’s a ton of animation/visual effects content and knowledge being shared online these days.  People hear about a technique or start to study an art form they are new to and are happy to share what they’re learning due to the excitement of their newly learned concept.  This shared wisdom really allows students and those art forms to progress at a relatively fast rate.  I just heard about this new school being setup by the guys over at Stan Winston Studios on the Animation Mentor forums.  It’s exciting to see what they’re going to be teaching after viewing some of  the video clips on the school’s home page, especially since it’s coming from a group of people at a studio with a long and significant history.

How To Train Your Dragon! March 26th

Since Stephen mentioned I would write a follow up post when he posted the “How To Train Your Dragon” trailer, I guess I better.

I just wanted to say how happy I am for “How To Train Your Dragon” to be the first film I worked on.  When I first got to DreamWorks Animation and looked over all of the visual development for this film I was blown away!  The character designs for the humans and dragons looked great and once I saw some of the early human animation tests by the great Simon Otto, Gabe Hordos, Kristof Serrand and Fabio Lignini I knew this would be a film to entertain many.

The film is going very well and I’m excited to see the final cut.  It’s hard to believe how much hard work was done on this film in such a short amount of time.  I know Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois, Alessandro Carloni, and many others sacrificed a lot of time to make this movie and I’m sure a lot of you will have a great time watching it in theaters!  The visual development, story, layout, effects, lighting, editing, crowds, rigging, and animation departments have done some amazing work on this project.  Definitely not one to be missed!
